Loch was "born" in a lake beside a small, sleepy town—once an unwanted child, cast into the watery depths and then saved by the fae, who took pity on him. The people there saw him as a god, of sorts, so they made regular offerings of food and treasures to him and prayed for his protection from malevolent, wandering spirits. And although they were wrong—he was no god—he happily welcomed their treatment, reveling in it for centuries. With time, however, the old ways seemed to fall out of favor, and their offerings grew smaller and fewer in number until it was as though he'd been all but forgotten about.
Feeling betrayed, Loch sought to teach the townspeople a lesson. He took to land and, in the middle of the night, lured their youngest away, only to return them to town days later, frightened and damp but largely unharmed. This continued until, on one such night, a young woman drowned in his lake. The townspeople were incensed; rather than resign themselves to living in fear of their god-turned-tormenter, they came together that next night to drive Loch away, brandishing spears and torches and burning bundles of foul-smelling herbs. It worked, and he fled to the sea, where he remained for another century, grieving the loss of his home. In his travels, he's since come upon Klewyth's shores, where he hopes to start a new life. |
